How to get rid of stuff in Barcelona

Barcelona collects furniture from the kerb for free, but only between 8pm and 10pm on your own street's assigned night. The drop-off network looks like one thing and is really two, and the larger half refuses furniture outright.

In short

If you only read one thing on this page.

Costs nothing

Punts Verds de Zona

The seven full-service recycling centres, and the only green points that take furniture, mattresses, timber and rubble. Also the route for fridges and air conditioners with CFCs, which the kerbside collection refuses.

Free

If you can't move it

Recollida gratuïta de mobles i trastos vells

Free kerbside collection of furniture, mattresses, doors, shutters and timber battens. No booking in most of the city. You look up your street's night and put things out in a two-hour window.

They collect

Without booking

Punts Verds de Barri i Mòbils

Around 130 neighbourhood and mobile green points for small electricals, clothing, batteries, paint, oils and fluorescent tubes. They refuse furniture, mattresses, timber, rubble and lithium batteries.

No appointment

Back into use

Recollida gratuïta de roba a domicili

The city will collect used clothing, shoes, towels and bed linen from your home, free, and it names the two work-integration non-profits that do it, Formació i Treball and Solidança.

Reused, not processed

From the editor

Barcelona's drop-off network looks like one thing and is really two, and almost everything that goes wrong here comes from not knowing that. Around 130 neighbourhood and mobile Punts Verds refuse furniture, mattresses, timber and rubble outright. Seven Punts Verds de Zona take all four, and they are also the only ones that will accept a fridge or an air conditioner with CFCs in it, which the kerbside collection names as a refusal. Check which kind you are driving to before you load the car. The other thing worth knowing is that the free clothing collection comes to your door, is booked on 010 and is run by two work-integration non-profits, which makes it the best outcome in this guide for anything wearable.

What residents need to know

The free kerbside collection needs no booking in most of the city: you find your street's night, and put things out in a two-hour window. What catches people is the Punt Verd network. There are around 130 of them, and the neighbourhood and mobile ones explicitly refuse 「runes, mobles i trastos」. No furniture, no mattresses, no timber, no rubble. Only the seven Punts Verds de Zona take those, and they are also the only ones that will take a fridge or air conditioner containing CFCs, which the kerbside service will not.

Where things go in Barcelona

Every option in this guide, arranged by the thing you are getting rid of. A missing name is not a refusal. It means nobody has told us either way, which is worth asking about before you make the trip.

The words Barcelona uses

These are the terms on the city's own pages. They stay in the local language here for the same reason they do on a form: the English version will not get you to the right page.

mobles i trastos vells
Furniture and bulky junk, the name of Barcelona's free kerbside collection.
Punt Verd
A municipal recycling point. This is the city's word; deixalleria survives only inside the proper names of the seven big sites.
Punt Verd de Zona
One of the seven full-service sites. The only ones that take furniture, mattresses, timber and rubble.
Punt Verd de Barri
A neighbourhood green point. Around 130 of these, and they refuse furniture, mattresses, timber, rubble and lithium batteries.
runa
Construction rubble. Refused by the kerbside collection and by the neighbourhood green points.
Targeta de Punts Verds
An optional card that earns a tax rebate for using the green points. Not needed to drop anything off.

Things that catch people out

  • Put furniture out between 8pm and 10pm on your street's assigned night. Look the night up before you carry anything down.
  • Four hillside neighbourhoods are the exception and DO need a booking on 900 226 226: el Rectoret, Mas Guimbau and Mas Sauró (Tuesdays from 8pm, collected next day), and the old centre of Vallvidrera, Font del Mont and Tibidabo (Mondays 8pm–10pm). The city says plainly that unbooked furniture will not be taken.
  • The kerbside service refuses rubble and anything from building work, and it refuses fridges and air conditioners containing CFCs. Those go to a Punt Verd de Zona.
  • Only the seven Punts Verds de Zona take furniture, mattresses, timber and rubble. The ~130 neighbourhood and mobile ones refuse all four, along with lithium batteries.
  • The zone sites are free for residents, need no ID and no proof of address, and the Targeta de Punts Verds is optional. It only earns a rebate.
  • There is a paid at-home collection that carries things down from inside the home, in under 36 hours, booked on 010. It is FREE if you hold a disability certificate, or have mobility difficulty and nobody to carry the item down.
  • Clothing has its own free home collection, booked on 010 and run by two work-integration non-profits. It needs a minimum of five bin bags, or two if you have accredited reduced mobility.

How to book Recollida gratuïta de mobles i trastos vells

In order. The sequence is the content, several of these fail if you do them the other way round.

  1. Find your street's collection night. Most of Barcelona needs no booking at all.
  2. In el Rectoret, Mas Guimbau, Mas Sauró, and the old centre of Vallvidrera, Font del Mont and Tibidabo, you MUST book on 900 226 226. Unbooked furniture there is not taken.
  3. Put it out between 8pm and 10pm on that night, and not before.
  4. Keep rubble and CFC fridges out of it. Both are refused, and go to a Punt Verd de Zona instead.

What it costs in Barcelona

What each option charges, in its own words, with the date we last read it. We publish no price of our own: a number we typed would go stale before the sentence it came from did.

Check who is carrying it away

The risk nobody mentions

Once someone drives away with your things, what happens next is on their word. These are the questions that get an answer worth having, and they work whatever the rules are where you live.

Ask where it goes

Not “we recycle”, the name of the place. A company that sorts for reuse can tell you who receives it.

Ask for it in writing

A message you can keep is worth more than an assurance on the doorstep, and costs an honest operator nothing.

What we cannot check

Licensing works differently in every country and we hold no licence data, so we never call a listed option licensed.
