What residents need to know
Bulky collection here runs on a monthly cycle rather than on request, so the useful question is which week is yours. Set material out between the Thursday and the Sunday before your collection week, and not before, early set-outs are the main way this goes wrong. The allowance is large, and once a year you can ask for double.
Where things go in Dallas
Every option in this guide, arranged by the thing you are getting rid of. A missing name is not a refusal. It means nobody has told us either way, which is worth asking about before you make the trip.

Electronics
State law is why this is free. Texas requires that computer and television take-back is convenient and free at the point of recycling, and that manufacturers may not charge separately for it, which is what Texas Recycles runs on. It is for households rather than businesses. The Home Chemical Collection Center takes electronics too, free if you live in Dallas and can prove it.

Clothing & textiles
Dallas has strong free routes for electronics and chemicals and none at all for clothes, so this is charity and neighbours. The Salvation Army collects from your door when you book, and the receipt is tax deductible. Buy Nothing only works once you are in your local group.

Paint and chemicals
One route, and it is free only if you live in Dallas. The Home Chemical Collection Center asks for proof of your current address, and residents of other cities pay a minimum fee unless their own city has an arrangement. Households only, and nothing collects it from your home.

The words Dallas uses
These are the terms on the city's own pages. They stay in the local language here for the same reason they do on a form: the English version will not get you to the right page.
- brush and bulky item collection
- The city's monthly kerbside collection, up to ten cubic yards, with nothing to book. Stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters are fine; anything holding coolant, gasoline or other chemicals is not, and tree limbs must be under eight inches thick and under ten feet long.
- collection week
- The one week a month assigned to your address, the thing to find out first, since the service does not run on request. Set material out between the Thursday and the Sunday before it; putting it out early is a code violation rather than a head start.
- oversize collection
- Once per calendar year you can request up to twenty cubic yards instead of the usual ten, through 311.
- Home Chemical Collection Center
- The city's year-round drop-off on Plano Road for paint, chemicals, garden and pool products, batteries, fluorescent tubes and motor fluids, none of which the monthly collection or the transfer stations will take. Free for Dallas residents with proof of address; a minimum $95 for residents of cities outside the county network.
- transfer station
- Where a load goes that the monthly collection will not take. They refuse chemicals, paint and other hazardous waste outright, so those go to the Home Chemical Collection Center instead.
- Texas Recycles Computers and TVs
- Two state-mandated manufacturer take-back schemes. State law makes collection free at the point you hand the thing over, but it is brand-tied: you go to your own manufacturer's programme rather than to one public drop-off, and it covers personal and home-business equipment only.
Things that catch people out
- Find your collection week first. Brush and bulky collection is once a month, not on request.
- Set items out between the Thursday and the Sunday before your collection week. Putting them out early is a code violation, not a head start.
- Up to ten cubic yards per collection, which is a lot, and once per calendar year you can request an oversize collection of up to twenty through 311.
- Stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters are fine. Appliances holding coolant, gasoline or other chemicals are not.
- Tree limbs must be under eight inches thick and under ten feet long.
How to book Dallas brush and bulky item collection
In order. The sequence is the content, several of these fail if you do them the other way round.
- Find your collection week. This is a monthly route, not a service you request.
- Set items out between the Thursday and the Sunday before that week. Earlier is a code violation rather than a head start.
- Stay under ten cubic yards, generous, and once a calendar year you can request an oversize collection.
- Keep out anything holding coolant, gasoline or other chemicals. Stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters are fine.
What it costs in Dallas
What each option charges, in its own words, with the date we last read it. We publish no price of our own: a number we typed would go stale before the sentence it came from did.
